The History of our Church
August 31, 2011: Canaan Baptist Mission was established. Wednesday night Bible studies were held in the home of our founding Pastor Missionary Luke Gwyn and his wife, Skyla.
October 9, 2011: Our first Sunday service was held.
November 30, 2011: A constitution was adopted and the church officially organized as Canaan Baptist Church.
February 2012: A lease was signed for a storefront property located at 217 S. Oklahoma Avenue in Weslaco, Texas.
July 2014: Our longest supported missionary was taken on for support … Steve & Brandie McKinley to Ireland.
August 2014: Founding Pastor Luke Gwyn resigned as the pastor and Pastor Hector Diaz was then voted in as the new pastor.
November 2014: Communications began with Iglesia Bautista Las Palmas for use/rental of their building located at 400 W. Esplanada Street in Weslaco, Texas.
January 2015: Services were moved from the storefront to Pastor Hector Diaz’ house while awaiting finalization of paperwork to purchase the property & building from Iglesia Bautista Las Palmas.
April 2016: An agreement was finally reached and paperwork was turned over to the attorney.
June 5, 2016: Due to delay in paperwork, the church was given permission to move into the building rent free.
April 2017: The final paperwork was signed to purchase the building and property from Iglesia Bautista Las Palmas.
March 2018: Pastor Hector Diaz resigned as the pastor. Missionary Jeff Shue served as interim pastor until the next pastor was called.
July 2018: Pastor Marco Canales was called as Pastor.
May 31, 2020: Pastor Marco Canales resigned as Pastor. Missionary Jeff Shue again served as interim pastor until he was called as the Pastor on March 31, 2021.
